Consulting refers to a broad category of services that offer expert analysis of, and recommendations for solving, a range of business problems, such as strategic positioning in the marketplace, improved operational efficiency, technology enhancement, staff restructuring, or mission/vision redefinition.  Consultants are external agents to the businesses that hire them, but they work extensively at client sites.  Some provide outsourcing services—they manage a portion of a business for a client (for a fee).  Most roles demand significant research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and communication skills.
