Jobs in this field are part of a risk management continuum.  Insurance offers protection against financial losses resulting from illness, accidents, natural catastrophes, or other causes.  Financial services provide planning and products for reaching monetary goals, such as sending children to college or enjoying a secure retirement.  Roles include agents or brokers, who impart advice and sell policies; claims adjusters, who investigate claims and negotiate settlements; actuaries, who estimate the probability and cost of coverable events; and, underwriters, who calculate risk, establish rates, and write policies.
