MSU College of Natural Science-Career Services Student Assistant/Career Peer Advisor-Job Opening
Are you interested in working directly with students to help them learn and apply career related information and skill-set areas for building their professional career success while also helping you to develop your own career plan?
The MSU College of Natural Science-Career Services Program is seeking a part-time undergraduate student to fill a Student Assistant/Career Peer Advisor role for the Fall 2024-2025 Academic year. This position will include working an average time commitment of 8-10 hours per week during the academic school year. (This is open to some flexibility per student and program advance discussion.) Paid training and orientation will also be provided.
Responsibilities for the position include:
● Advise students in the College of Natural Science on their career development and job search strategies related to their selected major and/or minor (both virtually and via in-person sessions)
● Coach and assist a diverse student population in areas related to resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, navigating career fairs, networking, and exploring Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.
● Serve students from diverse cultural backgrounds in the capacity of 1:1 pre-scheduled or drop-in career advising appointments, and pre-scheduled weekly drop-by hours
● Assist with career workshop presentations for students, in classroom settings, student clubs and as requested
● Collaborate on visibility, marketing, and accessibility of NatSci career center strategies, including the creation of promotional posters, flyers, and other digital works. Graphic design experience is not necessary, but is preferred
● Complete career-related projects as assigned/Design and distribute career program development information while promoting STEM career-related events and job fairs
● Learn and conduct administrative actions such as posting employment opportunities on Handshake, providing career event assistance, data collection, and computer related tasks
● Serve employment-related recruiters with assisting in job postings, information sessions, career fairs, and scheduling interview rooms
● Additional duties as assigned. Position may involve working in both a remote and in-person work environment (hybrid)
Required qualifications:
● Undergraduate student in the College of Natural Science
● Available for paid orientation & training hours
● Strong attention to detail and established work ethic
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working with diverse student populations
● Proven ability to work with minimal supervision while displaying initiative
● Demonstrated record of high-quality results
● Minimum of 3.0 GPA
● Receptive to team feedback and supervision
● Successful results as a team player
Preferred qualifications:
● Interest and/or experience in successfully mentoring/advising/coaching others
● Well-rounded, having successful experience in collaboration with others, extracurricular activities, volunteering, and leadership related activities
● Interest in and/or skills in Graphic Design, creativity, and/or advertising experience in social media/communication related areas
