What is this Career Fair?

The Virtual Teacher & Administrator Career Fair is online career fair being held to replace on-campus Teacher & Administrator events at public universities in the state of Michigan that were canceled due to concerns regarding COVID-19.

How should I prepare for the fair?

  • Create your CareerEco Account. Visit https://www.careereco.com/ to create and confirm your account. Then, complete your profile and sign up for both days of the fair.
  • Prepare your documents. Virtual Career Advisors are available at most public universities to help you with your resume. MSU students can Schedule an appointment to have their resume reviewed before the fair.
  • Check your Browser. Ensure you have Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox installed on your computer. These are the ONLY browsers that will support the chat functions in CareerEco.
  • Review how CareerEco works: We encourage you to read the entire CareerEco tutorial to best understand how the career fair will work. Screen reader friendly tutorial. Here are some important things to note:
    • Employer Messages: Employers can send you messages in the system, so be sure to check in frequently to make sure you aren’t missing anything.
    • Research Employers: Review employer lists and express your interest in chatting with these employers before the fair.
      • Review available jobs, browse the company website, and prepare questions as you would for an in-person career fair.
    • Review Chat Hours: employers will have different schedules of availability during the virtual career fair. Know when the employers you are interested in will be available, so you don’t miss the opportunity to chat with them.
    • Dress Professionally: Although this is a virtual fair, employers can request a video chat, so make sure you are well groomed and dressed professionally.

How does a Virtual Career Fair Work?

  • Employers will approach the career fair differently. Some will use this as a way to collect resumes and follow up with candidates later, and others will want to virtually chat with candidates just as they would for a traditional career fair.
  • Recruiters may have a lot of traffic (just as in a live fair) and be unable to reach everyone immediately. Remember that patience is highly appreciated by the recruiters and the right job is worth the wait.
  • Some employers use this forum for screening candidates, while others will conduct phone or video interviews during the event. Many employers make job offers to candidates found through virtual career fairs.
  • Not all employers will send email invitations to their chat sessions so join the event and visit employers that interest you. You are welcome to visit any chat sessions during the fair.

How can I be successful?

  • Prepare for the virtual career fair in the same way that you would prepare for an in-person career fair. Research employers and job openings, express interest in employers via the CareerEco platform, and prepare to talk about your skills and experiences. Additional career fair prep information.
  • Reach out to your career advisor who can help you with preparation, review your resume, and make sure you are ready to present your best self to employers. MSU students can schedule a Career Advising appointment in Handshake.
  • Upload your resume to your CareerEco account as soon as possible. Employers can reach out to you prior to the fair, and you want to make sure everyone has a chance to review your documents. Companies may begin screening resumes prior to the event and also invite you to visit their specific chat sessions and/or schedule video interviews before, during, or after the event hours.

  • Registration is already open and will be open through the end of the day of the Career Fair. Register early to give yourself time to study the list of participating employers and opportunities.
  • Upload your resume immediately after registering so employers can see it. Uploading your resume and/or cover letter is the first step in making your materials available to participating employers. After you upload your documents into the system, they are visible immediately for review by employers.

What technology do I need to attend the fair?

  • Participants need only a computer and internet access to participate. Interactions between employers and participants will be primarily through text chatting.
  • Employers do have the ability to initiate one-on-one video chats with you, so, you should be dressed as if you were going to an in-person career fair. Note: it is acceptable to indicate to an employer that you are unable to video chat, if this is not an option for you at the time of the request.
  • For the best experience, participants should log on using an up-to-date version of Google Chrome (preferred) or Firefox from a desktop/laptop. These are required to be able to view/hear any multimedia broadcasts presented by employers.

What employers will attend?

Employers will continue to register leading up to the days of the fair, so make sure to check back frequently for an updated list. You may also express interest in employers directly when logged in to the links above by clicking the checkmark to the left of the employer's name on the list.

Will there be Job Postings?

  • When logged into your account, click the Job Board tab.
  • Review job postings and be informed about available positions and how to apply.
  • Not all employers post positions, so make sure to also check the career pages of employer websites for the most updated information.

Who is in the employer chat rooms?

  • An employer will host a chat room where you and other participants can ask questions and converse.
  • You may enter between one to three rooms at a time; exit existing rooms to enter new ones.
  • The organization representatives will be listed once you are in the room.
  • Main chat rooms are not private and all participants, including other students, will see your questions or responses.
  • Private chatting is also possible between participants and employers.

What is a private chat?

  • An employer can invite you to a private chat. You will receive a notification next to the rep's name, with a number to the left of their name indicating how many messages are waiting. Click on the rep's name to accept and open the private chat window.
  • You may also initiate a private chat with an employer representative by clicking the down arrow next to the rep's name and inviting them to a private chat (if an employer sets themselves to busy, you will be unable to private chat with them; in these cases, chat through the public chat).

Some employers have job postings but don’t have chat options. Should I apply for their jobs?

  • Absolutely. Some employers use the Virtual Career Fair as a method to collect resumes and identify interested candidates.
  • By applying to job postings and/or noting your interest in a specific employer through your account, the employer will be alerted to look at your resume. Employers then have the option to follow-up directly with candidates that match their criteria subsequent to the virtual event.

Some employers have chat options, but don’t have job postings. Should I connect with them at the fair?

Some employers do not use the Virtual Career Fair to post all available jobs. We recommend visiting employer websites and review their career pages, so you may ask questions about available positions and show that you completed your research on the employer.

How can I follow up after the fair?   

  • The list of employers will be active after the fair. From the links below, click an employer's name on the list and review the ”Website and Contact” section of the employer profile for any contact details that may have been given (not all employers will give direct contact details.)
  • Employers will also have access to your uploaded documents and may contact you directly.
