Pre-Health Peer Advisors (PPA)

Position Summary

Pre-health Peer Advisors are an integral part of the College of Natural Science pre-health advising program. They provide the perspective of upper-class pre-health students in assisting with a variety of advising needs. The Peer Advisors work closely with the advising staff in the College’s Undergraduate Academic and Student Affairs Office. Their responsibilities include the following:

  • Presentations and advising assistance at New Student Orientation
  • Conducting advising appointments during weekly office hours
  • Providing information on university policies and procedures, and basic pre-health preparation information
  • Technological outreach and advising through Instagram, blogs, and email
  • Representing pre-health advising at department and university events
  • Assisting with development and management of pre-health programs and resources

Pre-health Peer Advisors have an opportunity to develop leadership, service, and communication skills, as well as build networks with MSU faculty and staff. These are valuable assets that can be applied to career pursuits and other future endeavors.

Work Schedule and Pay

Pre-health Peer Advisors are paid $13.73/hour. They must be available to work 10-20 hours per week, in a virtual format, for New Student Orientation throughout June and July. During the fall and spring semesters, each Peer Advisor is expected to work a minimum of 7 hours per week (spread over at least two different days, Monday- Friday).

Position Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Declared major in the College of Natural Science
  • Junior or senior status beginning Summer 2026 and plan to be enrolled in courses for both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
  • Pursuing a professional health career (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, pre-occupational therapy, pre-optometry, etc.)
  • 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Availability from 8-5PM Monday-Thursday, from mid-June through the end of July, as well as at the end of August for New Student Orientation (held virtually via Zoom)
  • Availability to work a minimum of 7 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Appreciation for the value of advising and interest in helping others
  • Problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new information
  • Basic computer skills including Word processing, email, and Zoom
  • College of Natural Science major must be the primary major if applicant is pursuing an additional major or double degree
  • Students in Lyman Briggs College are not eligible

  • Experience or interest in interacting with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Basic knowledge of pre-health requirements and campus resources
  • Participation in community service, clinical experience, research, student organizations, or other experiential learning activities
