Purpose
The Research Assistant will conduct research within experimental research department in the FRIB Science Division.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist in perform research and development activities to support the FRIB experimental program.
- Make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results.
- Assist in compiling results and preparing technical reports and documentation of outcomes.
- Collaborate with other researchers with respect to larger or more complex studies.
- Participate in the FRIB experimental program.
- Attend weekly research group meetings, experimental collaboration meetings, conferences and individual meetings with the supervisor to discuss research and present research.
- Perform literature study, and assist with publication preparation.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Significant knowledge in introductory-level physics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering, or other related field.
- Good communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
- Capacity to conduct guided research using analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to assist in designing and executing experiments and/or analyze experimental data, interpret results, and draw conclusions.
- Ability and/or interest to collaborate and work with a diverse group of students and scientists.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
Team Member
- Execute research work based on set objectives and feedback provided by the advisor.
- Execute research work safely, based on assigned training, and instructions from advisor.
- Stop work when discrepant conditions are encountered and inform line management.
- Adhere to the work schedule, workplace rules, policies, and procedures for FRIB/MSU.
Qualifications
Required
- Must be in active student status with current or future class enrollments with MSU.
- If applicable, the ability to work with export-controlled technology.
- Interest in the research program of a FRIB faculty member demonstrated through a statement of interest submitted with application material.
Desired
- Introductory courses in the College of Natural Science or Engineering
- Experience in programming.
- Experience in nuclear electronics and data acquisition.
- Experience in detector design and assembly.
