Job Description

The MSU Tour Guide team leads prospective students, admitted students and their support systems, as well as campus visitors and alumni on tours of Michigan State University’s campus. MSU Tour Guides provide insight into the college experience, showcase our beautiful campus and its history, reconnect alumni with campus, and share their unique Spartan Stories on every tour. Tour Guides are expected to be friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about MSU. Tour Guides take pride in delivering an outstanding Spartan experience to their guests.

Interviews will take place between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. on November 2, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November 3 to November 5. Candidates will be expected to schedule a 30-minute interview slot in which they will answer behavioral based questions as well as delivering a 3-5 minute passion presentation in order to be considered for the position. Hiring decisions will be sent out on Friday, November 6.

Candidates offered a position will be required to complete their employment with work verification documents. All documents must be ORIGINAL; no photocopies are accepted. And if they are not on hand at the time of application, it is recommended to develop a plan to get them in hand ASAP. A list of acceptable documents can be found at https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents. If you are a US citizen, you can use either one item from List A (passport) OR one item from List B AND one item from List C. After the completion of the hire, new Tour Guides will be expected to attend a paid training program (TG101) for the first six weeks of the 2027 Spring Semester, with a plan to complete the program prior to the end of February.

Please note that the employment offer is conditional based on the passing grade and approved graduation of the “TG101” training program. New Tour Guides will be expected to work their first solo shifts prior to April 1. Tours will take place seven days a week, with the highest need generally being 10a-12p and 1p-3p. Tour Guides can work up to 29 hours (domestic students) or 19 hours (international students) total, per week, across all MSU positions.

Employment Expectations

  • Respect in interactions with guests, colleagues, and supervisors from all backgrounds and identities
  • Work a minimum of one tour every pay period (bi-weekly)
  • Be comfortable leading tour programming out of the MSU Union
  • Attend all training sessions including All-Staff Monthly Meetings, Semester Trainings, and any supplemental All-Staff training sessions
  • Tour Guides will be expected to work Move-in/Fall Welcome shifts prior to the start of the Fall semester, the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship program January 29 and February 5, as well as Admitted Student Day April 10
  • Check and respond to MSU Tours emails and review D2L notifications and updates on a regular basis
  • Active participation in program offerings to facilitate personal and professional growth.
